Hans Tonino, The Hague 1954, studied mathematics at Delft University of Technology, with a strong interest in mathematical logic, formal languages and philosophy of natural language. He graduated on Montague Grammar, a logic developed by the late Richard Montague to formalise natural language, in relation to the problem of the Liar's Paradox as formulated in natural language. He got his PhD on a theoretical topic in computer science, namely Abstract State Machines (formerly called Evolving Algebras) for which he developed two different formal semantics.
He worked at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science of Delft University of Technology until his retirement in 2020, both as lecturer and director of studies in Computer Science and Embedded Systems. During his career, he was also a member of the faculty's management team for 6 years in the role of director of education and as such was responsible for all educational programmes of the faculty.
He started playing the flute in 1975, when he took lessons at the municipal music school in Delft for 9 years, followed by private lessons for some additional years. He followed a summer course with Wil Offermans and had some private lessons with Ann La Berge. During the last 10 years his interest grew in playing low flutes, especially bass and contrabass flutes.
In the course of many years he became strongly involved in free improvised music. For many years he was participating in the Rotterdamse Improvisatiepoel (R:IP), first as participant, later as project initiator/leader and board member. Many years later, he participated in one of the European Intuitive Music Conferences (EIMC) at that time led by Carl Bergstrøm-Nielsen. At present he is one of the organisers of this yearly event.
He also took and takes part in music making for theater and poetry (see projects). This involves as well as composing as performing music.
During the past 15 years he also became interested in making electronic music and started using Ableton Live and Max/MSP in live performance settings. In the picture below, he plays contrabass flute via Ableton Live with some self-developed Max/MSP patches running on a Macbook.
